We have always been taught to pay attention to changes in our breasts and to take the necessary steps to reduce the risk of breast cancer. But how often do we talk about taking care of our hearts?

Heart disease and heart attacks can affect anyone, yet they are often overlooked until something goes wrong. Many of us also believe that heart disease or heart attacks only happen to people who are overweight, but studies have shown that our lifestyle, daily habits, age, family history, and other health factors can all affect the health of our hearts.

An unhealthy lifestyle can increase our risk of developing heart disease, experiencing a heart attack, or having a stroke. This is why, as we grow older, we must become more intentional about taking care of our beloved hearts.

One important way to do this is by taking care of ourselves through what we eat. A healthy and balanced diet can go a long way in supporting our overall health and keeping our hearts healthy. We should make an effort to include plenty of fruits, green vegetables, nuts, seafood, and whole grains in our meals. At the same time, we should be mindful of unhealthy eating habits and make healthier choices as much as possible.

We should also make regular medical check-ups a priority. Don’t wait until you feel sick before you see a doctor. Some health conditions may develop without obvious symptoms, and regular check-ups can help identify potential problems early. As the saying goes, “a stitch in time saves nine.”

Taking care of our health is not something we should postpone until we are older or until a health problem appears. Every healthy choice we make today can contribute to our well-being tomorrow.

If we want to live healthy lives and remain strong and active as we grow older, we need to be intentional about caring for the one and only heart we have. Our heart works for us every day. Let’s make taking care of it a priority.
