Guilt is a self-focused reaction that occurs when we feel we have failed to meet a particular standard, whether it is our own expectation or someone else’s. It is often accompanied by regret and the wish that we could go back and do things differently.

However, not all guilt is the same. Guilt can generally be divided into two forms: healthy guilt and unhealthy guilt.

Healthy guilt serves a purpose. It acts like an inner signal that helps us recognise when we have made a mistake. It encourages us to take responsibility, make amends where possible, and grow from the experience. In this way, guilt can guide us toward becoming better people. It pushes us to repair relationships, apologise sincerely, and improve our behaviour moving forward.

Unhealthy guilt, on the other hand, weighs us down. It often arises from situations that are beyond our control or from unrealistic expectations we place on ourselves. This type of guilt does not lead to growth. Instead, it drains our energy, lowers our self-esteem, and steals our joy.

It is also important to understand that even healthy guilt can become unhealthy if we dwell on it for too long. When we repeatedly replay past mistakes in our minds without taking steps to move forward, guilt stops being helpful. It becomes a burden.

So how do we avoid allowing guilt to take away our happiness?

First, we should learn from our past mistakes and experiences. Every mistake carries a lesson. Instead of focusing only on what went wrong, ask yourself: What can I do differently next time? Growth begins when we shift our focus from regret to improvement.

Second, it is important to identify why we are feeling guilty. Is it because we truly did something wrong? Or are we holding ourselves responsible for something we could not control? Taking time to reflect honestly helps us separate real responsibility from unnecessary self-blame.

Finally, we must show ourselves self-compassion by acknowledging our mistakes, learning from them, and letting go of bitterness and resentment against ourselves. We are human, and being human means we will sometimes fall short. What matters most is our willingness to rise again.

As we go on our aging journey, we must make a conscious effort to become better versions of ourselves by letting go and not allowing guilt to spoil our journey.
