As women, we are often used to looking after others and being kind to the people around us. Many of us were raised to believe that caring for others is part of who we are. However, in the process of caring for everyone else, we can sometimes forget to care for ourselves.
Some of us have never really learned how to be kind to ourselves or give ourselves a much-needed break. We may have been taught, directly or indirectly, that putting our own needs first is selfish. But taking care of yourself does not mean that you care less about other people. In fact, learning to care for yourself can help you become healthier, happier, and better able to care for the people who matter to you.
We can begin to change this way of thinking by practising a few simple habits.
Speak kindly and supportively to yourself
Talk to yourself the way you would talk to someone you love and care about. Be patient with yourself when you make mistakes, face disappointments, or go through difficult seasons. You will always come across people who may overlook you or make you feel invisible. When that happens, make sure your own voice is not adding to the negativity. Speak words of kindness, encouragement, and support to yourself. Remind yourself of your strengths and the value you bring.

Take a few minutes regularly to sit quietly by yourself without using your phone or any other device. You do not always have to be busy or available to everyone. Simply sit to hear your lungs breathing and your heart beating. These moments can help you clear your mind and reconnect with yourself. Instead of constantly feeling overwhelmed by everything happening around you, you begin to regain a sense of calm and take greater charge of your life.
Learn that it is okay to put yourself first sometimes
Many of us have become the go-to person for family, friends, colleagues, and other people around us. We may say yes because we want to be helpful, we want people to accept us, or we do not want to appear uncaring. But constantly putting everyone else first can leave us exhausted and unfulfilled. As we grow older and seek to live a more balanced and fulfilling life, we need to recognise that taking care of our own needs is not wrong. Sometimes, it is necessary. It is okay to say no, set healthy boundaries, rest, or make a decision that is good for you even if it looks like a little bit of selfishness.
